Here is another short film from Rancho Aparte Films called "La Pierde Almas" or "The Lost Soul." I really enjoy the depiction of the artist's process and his work which is very reminiscent of Francis Bacon. Something about the violence in Bacon's work seems very immediate and relevant to artmaking within contemporary Mexico. Thoughts?
Francis Bacon - Painting - 1946
What a wonderful video- and I totally agree with the comparison of his work to that of Bacon.
I thought that there was an interesting interaction between the artists tools (palette knife, brush, canvas, light) and the "tools" of the cantina (glasses, bottles, aguardiente, stools). It almost made me think that the artist thought of the bartender as a sort of artist, composing space in a way he found interesting, and observing as the space is affected and transformed by the spontaneity and unpredictability of the subjects within that space.
I also was completely mesmerized by the Dia de los Muertos rituals-- again, paralleled with the rituals of the artist... what a fascinating post! Thank you for sharing!!!
