El Tiradito
Just returned from the Southwest rejuvenated, and ready to get back to work.
Today I want to share an understated location I visited while in
Tucson's Barrio Viejo neighborhood.
EL TIRADITO
(The Wishing Shrine)
This is the only shrine in the United States
dedicated to the soul of a sinner buried in unconsecrated ground.
It is affectionately called “El Tiradito” – The Castaway.
The many legends about its origin all involve a tragic triangle
love affair in the early 1870s. The mysterious powers of “El Tiradito”
are still an important part of local Mexican lore and culture.
This site is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The ground appears wet around the shrine and smells of rain.
The wall of the shrine has little pockets between the bricks,
stuffed with prayers and petitions.

magic mountain
No posts last week because classes are starting to get pretty hectic, combined with long nights in the studio... Fortunately I have some new things to show! I finished some sculptures and a new painting, and am making a great deal of progress on the rest of the mess I like to call my "projects."

I also took a brief trip down to the Quad-Cities this last weekend to celebrate my mother's birthday.
Of course, no trip would be complete without the requisite stops at La Rancherita restaurant in Moline and the gem of the Quad Cities: Ross'! Ross' is a 24hour diner tucked underneath the I-74 bridge. Ross' is home to the dish known as "The Magic Mountain" constructed of texas toast, hamburger meat, french fries, liquid cheese, and just about any other topping you can imagine. My favorite part of Ross' is the large patch of prickly pear cactus just outside the door that thrives year-round. The best potential hazard for late night patrons who may or may not be three sheets to the wind...
